It is difficult to describe India in 2010 without invoking the concept of Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam(some time happiness, some time sadness). The year has seen the best of times, as also the worst of times.
If the economy revived with steady growth, inflation remained a concern and reforms were sluggish.
The world hailed India not as an emerging power but as one that had 'emerged'.
At home, however, governance hit a new low, as corruption charges against the government dampened overall morale, affected its functioning and paralysed the entire winter session of Parliament. Never before in recent past had a year seen such stark contrasts.
The Indian economy roared back in 2010, with the Gross Domestic Product, or gross domestic product, growing at 8.6 per cent in the first quarter (January-March) and then going up a notch closer to nine per cent in the next two quarters of April-June and July-September.Yet the over all outlook remained bright with the industrial growth which is set to go very low if the the condition of inflation continues. It was the year in which whole country was enjoying the high growth rate of industrialization and fast recovery from global recession on one hand and on other hand the country was crying with the tear of onion(in hindi what we say pyaz ke aansu). The high inflation rate continues to be in double digit. The rising price of petrols, diesels are acting as a burner and the burn which has been created by this inflation is acting like a physical, mental and psychological torture on the middle class and the condition of people below poverty line is detoriating.
Coming to the point of security and safety-The year saw large number of train accident like the collison of trains in Uttar Pradesh or the derailment of Gyaneshwari Express near Kharagpur.Though India witnessed just a 2 minor terrorist attack(one at Pune and other at Varanasi) but the Naxal attacks were at high extent. One of the example is derailment of Gyaneshwari Express which witnessed the deaths in large amount. The other areas which were affected by Naxalites attack were Lalgarh in West Bengal,Dantewada in Chattisgarh and some areas of Bihar,Jharkhand and Orissa. But also by various operations of police forces in Orissa and Jharkhand many of these red rebels either surrenderd or were killed. Also we saw peacefull solution of Babri Masjid issue without any violence.
Coming to the point of sports-The year also saw rise and downfall in the field of sports. On one hand we hosted succesfull Commonwealth Games but we saw downfall of Indian hockey in the hockey world cup or the performance of India in Asiad at China. But there were many factors which had positive impact on Indian sports like India winning Asia Cup Cricket by ending fifteen years of drought and standing second amongst the countries in Commonwealth Games. Also many factors which arised just a month before the CWG like stadiums not ready for the Games or floods in Delhi or the collapse of bridge near the CWG village led to the bad impression of Indian sports in the world. But the tremendous and successful show by our national capital led to lots and lots of appreciation from the world specially from Australia, who poked the fun on India for not meeting the requirement.
Coming to the point of rise in corruption-The year saw rise huge rise in corruption like 2-G scam,CWG funds mismanagment or the Adarsh Society Scam which led to popularity of people like A Raja,Suresh Kalmadi,Nira Radia,Arun Shourie etc.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh removed A Raja as the communications minister, but the Opposition continued to demand the institution of a joint parliamentary committee, or JPC, to probe the allegations.
In an unprecedented breakdown of Parliamentary traditions in Independent India, the entire winter session of Parliament remained paralysed, as the Opposition refused to allow conduct of any business while the government, too, stuck to its stand that there was no need for a JPC.
Talking about Indian Politics-Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh was a picture of paradox in 2010.
The world hailed him as a great leader and the G-20 summits at Montreal and Seoul showed how global leaders looked up to him for guidance and advice.
Never before had leaders of five members of the Security Council visited India in the same year in the gap of a few weeks and made friendly noises.
Yet, at home, Singh has appeared as a leader beleaguered by charges of corruption against his government on the Commonwealth Games and the allocation of 2G telecom licences. One another hand a India saw change in polical scenario like the clean Image of leaders like Naveen Patnaik and Nitish Kumar.
With respect to above points I would conclude by saying that the year of 2010 was the year of High and Low...
